The Story

The team launched a project to stress test their complex order processing system. Traditional testing methods weren’t effective in catching regression issues that appeared when existing features and workflows started to break down. They also needed to tackle the challenge of testing multiple services interacting with each other and with clients in a live environment.

The Challenge

The team found that earlier tools like JMeter and Loadrunner had notable limitations. Locust, with its modular and event-driven design, proved more effective for building realistic user scenarios. To improve Locust’s reporting, they developed custom tools to fill in the gaps.

While building the remote ordering backend system, they faced challenges in maintaining reliability and performance under different load conditions. Traditional testing methods didn’t reveal key bottlenecks or reliability issues, so they turned to Locust for performance testing. Its flexible structure allowed them to simulate real-world usage more accurately. They also invested time in learning and applying AWS technologies to improve scalability and system resilience.

Management and Implementation 

The team set up a robust testing environment using Locust to simulate client requests and measure system performance under various loads. They focused on reproducible tests and realistic scenarios to get a clear picture of how the system would perform. AWS monitoring tools helped them track metrics and pinpoint areas for improvement.

Achievements and Milestones 

Integrating Locust into their workflow helped the team catch performance issues early. Through detailed testing, they identified and fixed bottlenecks, strengthening the system’s reliability and scalability. Their work with AWS also led to architectural improvements that boosted overall performance and resilience

The Results

The project successfully reduced production issues and established routine regression performance testing as a standard practice. By combining technologies like Locust and AWS, the team built a reliable and high-performing backend system for remote ordering. Their emphasis on performance testing and AWS optimization helped ensure system stability and scalability, which in turn improved customer satisfaction.
